Just when you thought you’ve tried alllllll the sushi joints in San Antonio… (actually we went there because they have a cool name, but nevertheless!)
Piranha Killer Sushi, located in the Quarry Market at Alamo Heights, brings together a HUGE menu of quality Japanese sushi rolls, complete with uncanny entrée names and even more entertaining COCKTAILS! This restaurant at first sight is modern, (obviously) oriental, (but not in the cheesy red dragons everywhere way), and very clean (and that is always refreshing).
I was HOOONGRY! So we had to start with an appetizer to set the mood right!
We started with the Grilled Chicken Spring Rolls and these rolls were perfectly displayed.
I’m no food expert, just to clarify, but the presentation was gorgeous. The appetizer was tangy, crispy, and the super-secret chili sauce took this dish to a whole new level. I’ve eaten my fair share of spring rolls (being a fatty and all) but WOW this one was spectacular. Order this.
COCKTAILS WHILST WE WAIT!
I had a Sexytini, [raspberry vodka, cranberry, pineapple, lime, & champagne, edible orchid] but I was a little (and by “a little” I mean #lowkey) salty because I REALLY wanted the edible orchid and didn’t get one in my drink L I wanted the pic to look like the one on their website. OH WELL. The drink was pretty good, ill give it 9.0.
In honor of my recent move from southern Arizona I decided to try the Mexican Sunburn Martini [tequila, triple sec, cranberry juice, lime juice and salt with a lime garnish] and that thing was STROOONG, but awesome. In a nutshell it was margarita concentrate, but in a delicious way. Loved that, 10!—>
Onto the food- SO- these sushi rolls have some phenomenal names which stood out for me because most sushi places have some #lamesauce roll names and when I go back I never remember what I ordered (i.e yellow roll, ping pang ting roll, etc- YALL GET IT!) That was not the case at Piranha Killer Sushi. The rolls had names like “The Love at First Sight” roll, “The Latino” roll, and “The Marry Me” roll to name a few. The sushi rolls pictured below are the Forget Me Not Roll and the Sexy Roll, respectfully.
WE demolished them. Both rolls had unique textures and tasted VERY fresh. Like made to order fresh, like everything was JUST made- (not like “they-made-it-an-hour-ago-and-it-sat-in-the-fridge-and-now-my-shrimp-tempura-is-cold-and-soggy” fresh)- like #LEGIT fresh. You can watch the sushi chefs make the rolls in the middle of the restaurant. No mo’ shady grocery store sushi for you! The shrimp was still hot despite the cold veggies surrounding it, and the sauce that was atop both rolls was like nothing I’ve ever tasted. Sort of like cocktail sauce and Sriracha sauce, but spicy, but not TOO spicy. It was fantastic –whatever the concoction was- it was good!
AND since it was Happy Hour we walked out with a less than $40.00 bill. That’s a #WIN for me.
Great atmosphere, uber fresh Americanized sushi, and DRANKS that are truly “killer.” Overall, I give this restaurant a 10 (EVEN though I didn’t get my edible orchid, I’ll let yall slide).
